What Is a Stacked Washer and Dryer? (And Should You Consider One?)

If you're short on space but still want the full functionality of a washer and dryer, a stacked laundry setup might be the perfect solution. A stacked washer and dryer typically consists of a front-load washer with a dryer mounted on top, connected securely with a stacking kit. This vertical arrangement is a space-saver for apartments, laundry closets, or compact utility rooms.

But not all stacked units are created equal—there are a few different types to consider depending on your space, budget, and laundry habits.

1. Laundry Centers

These are all-in-one, pre-stacked washer and dryer towers. They’re simple to install and great for small spaces. While they’re super convenient, they typically offer fewer features and smaller capacities than separate units.

2. Standard Front-Load Pairs

These are full-size front-load washers and dryers that can either sit side-by-side or be stacked using a stacking kit. This option gives you the best of both worlds: space efficiency and full-sized performance with more advanced features.

3. Compact Units

Designed specifically for small spaces, these front-load machines are smaller in size and often ventless, making them ideal for condos, small apartments, or second-floor laundry setups. Keep in mind, the capacity will be lower, but they're a smart fit for lighter laundry needs. Explore our compact washer and dryer recommendations.

Can You Stack a Top-Load Washer?

Unfortunately, no. Top-load washers aren’t built to support the weight of a dryer, and you wouldn’t be able to open the lid with another machine sitting on top. Stacking only works with front-load washers and compatible dryers.

Is a Stacked Washer and Dryer Right for You?

A stacked washer and dryer can be a game-changer—especially if you’re tight on space but still want the performance of full-sized laundry appliances. Whether you're living in an apartment, downsizing to a smaller home, or simply trying to make the most of a compact laundry area, stacking your units offers a smart, space-efficient solution. But before you commit, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Measure Twice, Stack Once:
Space-saving doesn’t mean one-size-fits-all. Be sure to measure your space carefully—not just the width and depth, but also the height. Don’t forget to account for door clearance, ventilation, and connections for water, power, and drainage.

  • Match with Care:
If you’re buying a washer and dryer separately, make sure they’re compatible for stacking. Not all models are designed to work together, especially across different brands. You’ll also need a stacking kit made specifically for your appliances—this ensures a secure, stable setup.

  • Think About Access:
While stacking frees up floor space, it also changes how you interact with your machines. The dryer controls will be higher up, so consider the height of everyone using it. For some, it may be helpful to have a small step stool nearby.

  • Consider Your Laundry Needs:
If you have large loads or a busy household, a standard front-load pair stacked vertically may be a better fit than a compact or laundry center unit. On the other hand, if your laundry needs are light and space is extremely limited, a compact model could be perfect.

How to Stack a Washer and Dryer: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Consult the Owner’s Manual

Before doing anything, make sure your appliances are stackable. Even models from the same brand may not be compatible.

Step 2: Prepare the Space

  • Measure the space to ensure proper fit

  • Leave at least 1" clearance on each side

  • Allow 5–6" behind the units for hoses and ventilation

  • Ensure closet doors have 1" clearance at the bottom for airflow

Use a level to check the floor. An uneven surface can cause dangerous shaking or tipping.

Step 3: Get the Right Stacking Kit

Stacking kits include brackets and clips to secure the dryer on top of the washer. Kits are brand-specific—get one that matches your exact models.

Step 4: Prep the Dryer

  • Lay the dryer on cardboard or towels to protect the finish

  • Remove the dryer feet using a wrench

  • Install any stacking feet if included in your kit

Save the removed feet in case you want to unstack the units in the future.

Step 5: Position the Washer

Move the washer into place, leaving a little extra room behind. Use a level to adjust the feet until it’s completely balanced.

Step 6: Stack the Dryer

With a second person, lift and place the dryer on top of the washer. Align the sides and slightly overhang the back per kit instructions. Use foam pads if your kit includes them.

Step 7: Attach the Brackets

Secure the dryer to the washer using the brackets and screws in your stacking kit. Follow the manual’s instructions to tighten them properly.

Step 8: Reconnect Everything

Hook up the washer hoses, dryer vent, and power cords. Ensure everything is secure and routed safely to avoid kinks or obstructions.

Step 9: Run a Test Cycle

Run a quick, empty load in both machines. Listen for excessive shaking or noise—if things seem off, double-check leveling and bracket placement.

A Few Expert Tips

  • Don’t overload your stacked washer or dryer. Smaller loads help maintain balance.

  • Clean the dryer vent regularly to reduce fire risk.

  • Use lifting straps to make stacking safer (and easier on your back).
